Direct media links versus web page links

Identify the address needed to download a direct media file.

  1. A direct link points to the MP4, audio or another permitted file itself. A page containing a player is not necessarily a direct file, even if its address contains “video”.
  2. Use a public HTTPS address from a trusted source. Do not paste local network addresses, management panels, cookies or links containing personal access keys.
  3. After inspection, check the file type, available profiles and size when known. H.264 MP4 improves video compatibility; select the available original option to keep the source file.
  4. If inspection fails, check whether the address opens without signing in. A temporary link may have expired or its server may prohibit external downloads. Obtain a current permitted address from the owner.

An .mp4 suffix does not prove that a server returns video. Fetchoo checks the response and limits the resulting file to 2 GiB.
